Cannabinoids 101

CBD, CBG, CBN, THCv — what they are, minus the hype

Hemp makes dozens of cannabinoids beyond CBD. Here are the four you will actually see on a Chime & Chill label, and what makes each one different — without the medical claims.

The short version

  • Hemp makes many cannabinoids; CBD is just the famous one.
  • CBG is often called the "mother" cannabinoid — the precursor the others come from.
  • CBN forms as hemp ages and is the one most associated with nighttime products.
  • THCv is chemically related to THC but, in hemp-legal amounts, is non-intoxicating.

CBD gets all the attention, but it is one of dozens of compounds the hemp plant makes. When you see extra letters on a label — CBG, CBN, THCv — those are other cannabinoids, each with its own chemistry. Here is what they actually are, in plain English, with no promises about what they will do for you.

This is education, not medical advice. We are describing what these compounds are, not claiming they treat, cure, or prevent anything. How any of them affects you is individual, and the research is still developing.

First, what is a cannabinoid?

A cannabinoid is a class of natural compound found in the cannabis and hemp plant. Your body also has a system that interacts with them — the endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors involved in everyday balance. That is the honest, non-hyped version: cannabinoids are plant compounds your body happens to have receptors for. Everything past that gets speculative fast, so we will keep it grounded.

CBD — the well-known one

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the most-studied, most-available hemp cannabinoid. It is non-intoxicating — it does not produce a high — which is a big part of why it went mainstream. It is the backbone of most of what we make, usually as pure isolate so there is no THC along for the ride.

CBG — the "mother" cannabinoid

Cannabigerol (CBG) is often called the mother or precursor cannabinoid, because in the living plant its acidic form is what CBD and THC are actually made from. The plant converts most of it as it matures, so mature hemp contains relatively little CBG — which historically made it rarer and pricier to isolate. It is also non-intoxicating. You will see it in our daytime-leaning blends.

CBN — the one that shows up at night

Cannabinol (CBN) is interesting because it is largely a product of age. It forms as THC slowly oxidizes over time — think aged hemp rather than fresh. It has become the cannabinoid most associated with nighttime and wind-down products. It is mildly, if at all, intoxicating in the amounts used in hemp products. It anchors our PM-leaning line.

THCv — the one with the confusing name

Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCv) trips people up because the name looks like THC. They are chemically cousins, but they are not the same molecule, and in the small, hemp-legal amounts used in wellness products THCv is non-intoxicating. It shows up in some of our focus-oriented, daytime products. Despite the scary-looking name, it will not get you high at these levels.

Do they work better together?

You may hear about the "entourage effect" — the idea that cannabinoids and terpenes influence one another when combined. It is a genuine and active area of research, not settled science, so we describe our blends by which cannabinoids they contain and let you decide, rather than promising a combined effect.

How this shows up on our shelf

We do not add rare cannabinoids for the label. Each blend is built around a time of day and a simple intention — a brighter morning, staying on task, an easier evening — and the cannabinoid is chosen to match. If you want to see that mapped to actual products, our shop is organized by need rather than by chemistry, so you never have to memorize any of this.

Ready when you are.

Every Chime & Chill product is THC-free, NYS lab-tested, nut-free, and pre-dosed so there is nothing to guess. Shop by how you want your day to feel.

Common questions

Are CBG, CBN, and THCv legal?

When they are hemp-derived and the finished product meets the federal under-0.3%-THC threshold, these cannabinoids are broadly available. Our products go further and are non-detect for THC, verified per batch. Rules do vary by state, so local law always governs.

Will any of these get me high?

No. CBD, CBG, and THCv are non-intoxicating at the levels used in hemp wellness products, and CBN is at most mildly so. The high comes from THC, which our products are made without.

Which cannabinoid should I pick?

We would gently steer you away from picking by molecule. Pick by what you want out of your day — morning, focus, or evening — and let the blend handle the chemistry. Our shop is sorted that way on purpose.
